Develop and support Prevention, Diagnosis and Management of Infectious Diseases across Pacific Nations

Objectives

Prevention of Infectious Diseases

  • Advocate for necessary resources for hand hygiene and other infection prevention priorities.
  • Educate healthcare workers to reduce the spread of infections in hospital.
  • Support the development of national IPC guidelines for optimal practices.
  • Assist in developing contextually appropriate solutions.
  • Advise on hospital and national antimicrobial resistance and stewardship programs.

Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases

  • Develop and maintain a network of quality microbiology services for critical diagnostic testing, including bacterial culture, antibiotic susceptibility, and molecular testing.
  • Provide training, develop guidelines, and advocate for appropriate diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship to conserve and effectively use scarce resources.
  • Ensure local availability of essential microbiology testing equipment.
  • Develop and support laboratory quality systems in line with ISO 15189 standards.
  • Develop new, setting-appropriate diagnostic methods.
  • Educate medical staff, pathologists, and trainees in microbiology, infectious diseases, and infection prevention and control.
  • Mentor medical laboratory scientists and other staff, offering training opportunities both in-country and abroad.
  • Promote the importance of diagnostic microbiology to hospital administrators, politicians, and the broader community.

Management of Infectious Diseases

  • Train healthcare workers to better recognize infections and understand antibiotic and treatment use.
  • Develop effective multidisciplinary responses to outbreaks.
  • Contribute to the development and review of national infectious disease management guidelines and implementation strategies.
  • Identify, train, and support clinical champions to drive practice changes within their facilities.
  • Maintain an online clinical resource for infectious diseases and microbiology.
