Additional points to consider in rodent management which were raised from the discussion:
- Using a form of rodent control that causes delayed death of the rats was important as otherwise they learn not to go near whichever traps, etc that they see causing the death of other rats.
- Rats can adjust their birth rates when they see their population numbers dropping, so it’s important to have consistent, long term control measures to ensure that rodent numbers don’t rise again.
- Collecting information on the rodent situation, the damage they cause and the costs involved, and then the savings that can be or are being made by control measures is important. This is helpful in providing evidence to health service management or possible funding sources to get support for launching a rodent management project in your service.
